Two new femme fatales are heading to Mystic Falls when “The Vampire Diaries” returns from its winter hiatus.

TV Line reports that “The Following” alum Mouzam Makkar will appear in the recurring role of Alex, a “beautiful, charming and cocky researcher at the head of a mysterious organization.”

Her entrance will be tied up with Enzo’s backstory, according to executive producer Caroline Dries.

“As he’s trying to find his place in the world, she comes in and says, ‘Let me help you out with that.’ Is she good? Is she bad? What’s her bigger agenda? We’ll pull back her layers as the season goes on,” says Dries.

Could this “mysterious organization” have anything to do with the Augustine society, who held Enzo captive for decades? The Augustine scientists experimented on and tortured Enzo for years, so he’s probably a little wary of Alex’s role as a researcher. Though presumably human, Alex is described as a “viper in sheep’s clothing,” which means the vampires should probably watch their backs.

Also joining the cast of “The Vampire Diaries” is Leslie-Anne Huff as Rayna, a lethal vampire hunter bent on revenge. She will make her debut in true supernatural fashion, when she “returns to the world of the living after being taken out by her enemies.”

Rayna is expected to start causing trouble in episode 12, while Alex’s first appearance will be saved for episode 14, which will also be a crossover episode with “The Originals.” Coincidence? Watch and find out!

“The Vampire Diaries” returns Friday, Jan. 29 at 8pm on Portland’s CW.
