In Portland, you can have your cake and eat it, too. This week, indulge in an all-ages happy hour and treat yourself to a confection with confetti. Gourmet cupcakes can be found in all corners of Portland, whether it’s a night out with girlfriends, a surprise for your co-worker, a creative first date or your kid’s birthday party, here are the local bakeries that have you covered.

With two locations, Cupcake Jones offers scratch-baked cakes, fillings, frostings and garnishes handmade in its Pearl District bakery from locally sourced, natural ingredients. Fan favorites include Velvet Painting, German Chocolate and Peanut Butter Cup — and there’s always a new seasonal selection to try, such as Cinnamon Bun and Chocolate Covered Pretzel.

And the owner’s have a strong reputation for giving back to the community: any leftover cupcakes are donated to Portland’s Blanchet House, dedicated to feeding, clothing and sheltering those in need. Sweet!

The three-time winner of TV’s “Cupcake Wars,” Kyra’s Bake Shop in Lake Oswego, is known nationwide for it’s gluten free cupcakes. Owner Kyra Bussanich’s own food allergies lit the fire in what has been a roaring success. Her shop is committed to serving high-quality treats so you can indulge, but “still feel good.” Many treats are also without dairy. Try a staple such as Birthday Cake, Skinny Vanilla Latte or Raspberry Lemonade or be adventurous with Lemon Basil, California Dream or Peppermint Hot Chocolate.

Known as Portland’s first all-vegan retail bakery, Sweetpea’s treats are made with organic ingredients and locally grown flour. Order ahead and mix-and-match flavors. Try a vanilla, chocolate, coconut, lemon, oatmeal spice, red velvet or carrot cake flavor paired with a raspberry, peanut butter, Tuxedo, lemon chiffon frosting, among others. Make your cupcake a dessert — the shop is also known for it’s great soups and sandwiches.
